Three [3] Deceptive Marketing Tactics in the Concrete Floor Coating Industry (and How to Spot Them)

If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

If you’ve started shopping for a concrete coating for your garage, patio, or driveway, you’ve probably noticed something strange: the prices, promises, and promotions are all over the map.

One company advertises 60% off, another claims they can coat a two-car garage for $899, and others promise products that are “20X better than epoxy.”

At Concrete Coating Austin, we believe homeowners deserve transparency—not hype. Let’s break down some of the most common (and misleading) marketing tactics in the concrete coating industry and explain what you should really be looking for.

#1: “60% Off!” — The Inflated Price Game

You may have seen promotions like:

“60% off, 60 months free financing, plus a $60 Visa gift card!”

At first glance, it sounds like an incredible deal. But here’s the reality:

If a company can offer 60% off, that means the original price was dramatically inflated to begin with.

Reputable concrete coatings are priced based on:

  • Material costs

  • Surface preparation (the most important part)

  • Skilled labor

  • Warranty and long-term durability

There is no scenario in which a company can slash prices by more than half and still maintain quality—unless the starting price was never real. This tactic is designed to create urgency and to distract from the product's true value.

A fair price doesn’t need a gimmick.

#2: “$899 for a 2-Car Garage.”

A standard two-car garage typically ranges from 400 to 500 square feet.

A legitimate, professionally installed coating system usually costs around $2,000–$2,500, depending on prep and materials.

So how does someone offer $899?

They don’t—at least not honestly.

Here’s what usually happens:

  • The $899 is a starting price, not the final price

  • Critical steps like crack repair or proper grinding cost extra

  • Lower-grade materials are used

  • The installer rushes the job to make it “work”

When you factor in advertising costs, materials, labor, insurance, and overhead, $899 would actually result in a loss on a real installation. Corners have to be cut somewhere.

And unfortunately, those corners show up later as peeling, hot-tire pickup, fading, or premature failure.

#3: “20X Harder Than Epoxy” — What Does That Even Mean?

This one sounds impressive… until you think about it.

Harder than epoxy—according to what test? Is it abrasion resistance? Tensile strength? Compressive strength? Was it lab-tested? Field-tested? Compared to which epoxy?

There is no industry-standard measurement that defines a coating as “20X harder.” It’s a marketing phrase—not a specification.

And more importantly, Harder does not automatically mean better.

A coating that’s too rigid can actually:

  • Crack when concrete shifts

  • Delaminate over time

  • Fail under temperature changes

What really matters is a balance of:

  • Proper surface preparation

  • Strong adhesion

  • Flexibility

  • Moisture tolerance

  • UV stability

Those qualities don’t fit neatly into a catchy slogan—but they’re what make a coating last.

What Homeowners Should Look for Instead

Rather than flashy discounts or bold claims, ask these questions:

  • How is the concrete prepared before coating?

  • What material system is being used—and why?

  • Is the price transparent and all-inclusive?

  • What kind of warranty is offered?

  • How long has the company been installing coatings locally?

At Concrete Coating Austin, we don’t believe in inflated pricing, bait-and-switch offers, or vague performance claims. We believe in educating our customers, setting realistic expectations, and delivering results that last.

If you ever have questions about a quote or a claim you’ve seen elsewhere, we’re happy to talk it through—no pressure, no sales tricks.
